Courses

In scouting, growth comes through both theoretical and practical training.

Training

Scout Leader Courses

In scouting there is a separate training path for leadership of each age section.

Basic Leadership Course

The first course on the leadership path. It is attended by candidates who are high-school graduates, have completed the age of 18 and are recommended by their club; it is held in a camp setting.

Section Courses

These are the leadership courses for the 7–11, 11–15 and 15–18 age sections.

Leader Development Courses

These are the courses that authorise Scout leaders to run activities.

Leader Trainer Courses

These are the courses and seminars held at the level of training Scout leaders.

Sections

Scouting for every age

Scouting continues from the age of 7 through sections suited to each age group.

Cub Scout

ages 7–11

Our youngest Scouts, learning through play.

Scout

ages 11–15

The section where nature, discovery and team spirit develop.

Senior Scout

ages 15–18

Preparation for leadership: young people who seek adventure and serve society through projects.

Rover Scout

ages 18–25

A section that allows university-age young people who are not yet assistant leaders or leaders both to continue scouting and to prepare for leadership.

Leader

18+

Volunteer leaders who guide and show the way.

Progression System

The proficiency system

Scouts advance step by step by completing proficiencies suited to their section; every completed proficiency is a mark of achievement.

1

Start a proficiency

The Scout chooses a proficiency (field of work) suited to their section.

2

Complete the requirements

The Scout carries out the requirements and presents the evidence.

3

The leader approves

The leader assesses and approves the Scout’s progress.

4

Complete your proficiency

Once all requirements are approved, the proficiency is complete and the Scout moves up a step.

Track your progress with the Record of Merit

Manage your proficiencies and your score digitally.

The Leadership Path

Adult Entry

The first step into the organisation. It is the proficiency everyone over the age of 18 must complete; on completion you become a Scouting Volunteer. Equipment lists, the Basic Leadership Course and proficiencies that can be completed over time all open after this step. As a scouting volunteer you may assist and support leaders at camps and take part in TIFAKE courses and activities. Being a scouting volunteer is not leadership: for that you must hold a licence, have a unit of your own and have a mentor senior to you.

Basic Leadership Course 1 and 2

The Basic Leadership Course. Course 1 is for those coming from scouting: it is open to people who obtained their licence at least six months earlier and completed the required items during their time as Scouts. Course 2 is for those new to scouting; those who obtain a licence, join a club, have a mentor appointed and complete the Adult Entry proficiency attend a six-night camping course. On arrival at the course a detailed interview is held to confirm that the requirements were genuinely carried out; those who fail are not admitted. A high-school diploma is also required for the leadership course.
